A garota indígena da etnia apurinã de nove anos, internada desde abril em uma maternidade de Manaus, deu à luz ontem a uma menina de 2,210 quilos e 42 centímetros. A cesariana, prevista para a sexta-feira, foi antecipada pela médica Christiane Rodrigues Marie. A garota teve contrações e entrou em trabalho de parto.		A nine year old aboriginal girl of the Apurinã tribe, interned since April in a maternity-ward in Manaus, gave birth yesterday to a baby girl; 2.2 kilos and 42 centimeters. The cesarean birth, planned for Friday, was anticipated by the doctor, Christiane Rodrigues Marie, but the girl had contractions and started labour early.
"A situação em que a menina chegou aqui não era boa, mas a gestação de altíssimo risco evoluiu de maneira excelente", afirmou a médica. Ela está internada há três meses porque tinha com malária falciparum, anemia, pneumonia e também por se tratar de uma gravidez considerada de altíssimo de risco, dada a idade da paciente. A gravidez completaria 38 semanas amanhã.		"The condition of the girl when she arrived here was not good, but this high-risk gestation evolved in an excellent way", affirmed the doctor. She was interned here for three months because she arrived with malaria, anemia, and pneumonia; and also to deal with the high-risk pregnancy considering the age of the patient. The pregnancy would have completed 38 weeks tomorrow.
"A mãe é muito pequena e magra, embora saudável, sem as doenças que tinha quando foi internada. Mas o corpo dela não agüenta mais o peso da barriga e o bebê já está pronto para nascer", disse a médica. Ela considera um "milagre" o fato de a indígena ter conseguido levar a gravidez em frente.		"The mother is very small and thin, although otherwise healthy and without the illnesses she had when she was interned. But her body could no longer support the weight of her belly and the baby was ready to be born", said the doctor. She considers it a "miracle" that the girl brought the pregnancy to term.
A garota, órfã, mora com a irmã e o cunhado na comunidade Jaturana, no município de Manacapuru, 120 quilômetros distante de Manaus.		The girl, an orphan, lives with her sister and brother-in-law in the Jaturana community, in the municipality of Manacapuru, 120 kilometers from Manaus.
Ao ser internada, em abril, acreditava-se que fosse deficiente auditiva. "Ela tinha um tampão de cera no ouvido, descoberto em uma audiometria. Agora ela ouve e fala relativamente bem", disse Christiane.		When she was interned in April, we thought she was deaf. "She had a wax plug in her ear, discovered in a hearing test. Now she hears and speaks relatively well", said Christiane.
A mãe e a criança ainda deverão permanecer na maternidade por 30 a 45 dias. Depois, elas retornarão à comunidade Jaturana.		The mother and child will have to remain in the maternity-ward for 30 to 45 days. Later, they will return to the Jaturana community.
De acordo com nota da Fundação Nacional do Índio (Funai), depois desse período, a garota deverá ser encaminhada "aos cuidados da comunidade e do pai da criança". Em contato telefônico, a assessoria da Funai informou que um relatório de uma antropóloga ao Ministério Público Federal aponta um provável pai da criança. When she was discovered, the pregnancy was already in its fifth month. Since she is an underage aboriginal, the Public Ministry and Federal Police (PF) have begun inquiries. De acordo com a PF, várias pessoas da comunidade foram entrevistadas e o inquérito está em andamento. A polícia deverá colher o DNA da criança assim que nascer, para investigar o parentesco com suspeitos. O procurador que trata do caso no Ministério Público Federal está em férias.		According to the PF, many people in the community have been interviewed and the inquiry is in progress. The police will take a DNA sample from the child soon after birth, to investigate kinship with suspected fathers. The Federal Public Ministry solicitor dealing with the case is on vacation.
Segundo o superintendente regional da Fundação Nacional de Saúde (Funasa), Francisco Ayres, é natural para a etnia apurinã que garotas casem e tenham filhos quando já menstruam, independentemente da idade, mas não é favorável ao estupro. Neste caso, no entanto, o pai não se revelou.		According to the regional superintendent of the National Foundation of Health (Funasa), Francisco Ayres, it is natural among the Apurinã that girls marry and have children when they begin to menstruate, irrespective of age, but rape is not condoned. Ayres relatou que quem descobriu a gravidez e encaminhou a garota à Funasa e ao hospital foram membros de um grupo de trabalho do programa de Desenvolvimento Sustentável da Petrobrás que trabalha em comunidades próximas da obra do gasoduto Coari-Manaus.		Ayres said that it was members of a team of Petrobras' Sustainable Development Program working in nearby communities on the Coari-Manaus gas pipeline who discovered the pregnancy and brought the girl to Funasa and to the hospital.

BUT - nowhere can I find a map showing Jaturana. Sure enough, Manacapuru is about 120 km west of Manaus, but no sign of Jaturana thereabouts at all. According to Juliana Schiel, the lands of the Apurinã are far to the west, 600 or 700 kilometers from Manaus, almost to Acre state, between Boca do Acre and Labrea, on the Rio Purus around Pauini.

Ahh, Jatuarana, got it! MSN Encarta beats Google Earth one more time! And a little place called Jaeteua which might be it - also on the map.

The story still raises more questions for me than it answers.

Na aldeia Jatuarana moram 35 pessoas distribuídas em cinco casas de madeira, todos parentes da menina Apurinã. A terra de 5.000 hectares está homologada. O local fica a uma hora e meia de voadeira (canoa com motor de popa) pelo rio Manacapuru.

Thirty-five people live in the five wooden houses of the village of Jatuarana, all related to the little Apurinã girl. The five hectare plot of land is 'homologada' meaning 'ratified' or 'with official title'. The area is an hour and a half (by canoe with outboard motor) up the Manacapuru river from Manacapuru.
