The African Union (AU) summit in Banjul is over. The UN has given up and gone home. There is no help for the people of Darfur. The Janjaweed say,

"You are slaves, this is our land."

President Omar el-Bashir has proved in Banjul as good as his word in rejecting, finally and definitively, a UN or international role in protecting civilians and humanitarian workers in Darfur; and the world community has found nothing to say in return.

Amidst the ghastly silence of international impotence, the suffering and destruction in Darfur and eastern Chad only accelerate, making a mockery of any profession of an international responsibility to protect.
