What does it mean when we say; 'thanks be to God', 'praise the Lord', 'through the grace of God', 'God bless you' ... and the like? It is primarily superstition of course; even people like Leonard Cohen often write G-d, most capitalize it. After superstition comes self-serving - one way and another it is a brag. When all of that has been sifted away and sluffed off, something remains, something else.
