Landmark!? Victory!? Bollocks! At best a temporary setback for Cargill - the Brazilian government is with them.

A point which interested me (though I do not understand it): ... a slight slowing in the rate of destruction from the year before - a trend experts attribute to the weakening of soy bean prices and the strengthening of Brazil's currency on world markets. I can see if soy prices fall then the rate of deforestation slows, ok, but why does it slow when Brazil's currency strengthens?

irony? in Brasil? not usually ... McDonalds hand-in-hand with Greenpeace is cute though eh?

Neste fim de semana, desembarcaram em Manaus membros da direção do McDonalds da Europa, responsáveis pela decisão da rede de fast-food, no ano passado, de não comprar frangos alimentados com soja plantada sobre área desmatada de floresta amazônica. Vão fazer uma espécie de circuito Elizabeth Arden da região, ciceroneados pelo Greenpeace.		This weekend, members of McDonalds' european management - those responsible for last year's decision by the fast-food chain not to buy chickens fed with soy grown in deforested areas of the Amazon Rainforest - will arrive in Manaus. The will make a sort of Elizabeth Arden tour of the region, squired about by Greenpeace.

A turma do McDonalds visitará uma Reserva Extrativista, a de Mamirauá, e depois uma área onde opera a Precious Woods, madeireira certificada. De lá, voltam para Manaus, onde ouvirão apresentações falando sobre a importância da preservação da Amazônia para o mundo. Depois, pegam um avião para fazer sobrevôos sobre Amazonas, Mato Grosso e Pará. Lá de cima, verão área de floresta intocada e frentes de desmatamento.		The McDonalds team will visit the Mamirauá Traditional Reserve, and an area where Precious Woods, a certified logging company, operates. They will then return to Manaus where they will hear presentations talking about the importance of preserving Amazonia for the world. Later, they will make overflights of Amazonas, Mato Grosso, and Pará states. There, from on-high, they will see untouched areas of forest faced with clearcutting.

The highlight of the visit by McDonalds management will be an overflight of Santarém, in Pará state, where the Cargill port is located and soy fields opened in this region by the company in the last five years. These were the fuze for the restauraunt chain's decision to stop buying chicken fattened with soy originating in clearcuts.

Na semana que vem, as Ongs retomam suas reuniões com as esmagadoras de soja que atuam no Brasil e que no ano passado se comprometeram a parar de comprar soja plantada em área de desmatamento recente.		Next week the ONGs will restart their meetings with soy handlers (?) active in Brazil who promised last year that they would stop buying soy grown in recent clearcuts.

What does 'recent' mean exactly I wonder?
