yes, West's book is an eye-opener, it seems as if some of the sentences in Maria Petringa came straight from here but I do not have both of them side-by-side, I will look into this later

that Richard Burton, Reade, and a remarkable woman, Mary Kingsley, went there with the nearly explicit object of finding death ...

The book came and I read it. Brazzà, A Life for Africa, by Maria Petringa - is a bad joke, sorry Maria, pretty well useless - the story is so good that I read to the end but ... Anyway, luckily I ordered another one too - Brazza of the Congo by Jack West. Out of print and so on - I had to get a used copy. I have not read it all, looks good so far ... more later.

I ordered it. This is a good guy, Pietro Paolo Savorgnan di Brazzà, a 'white hat', did what he should do and got murdered for it apparently by political interests. Nonetheless he was a good guy, a full man by the look of it ... anyway the book came today. When I have read it I will maybe have more to say.

Brazzaville, the capital of The Republic of the Congo, aka Congo (distinct from The Democratic Republic of Congo, aka Zaire), was named after him.

Some interesting info (if you read French):
    Fondation Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza
Part of someone's thesis on the subject.
